We travel the world to source and cut the finest gems
EMERALD
In the early 1500s Portuguese merchants carried Emeralds from South America to India’s coastal trading center of Goa—and on to the royal treasuries. Today, the ILA family’s home in Rajasthan, India is the world’s center for emerald cutting, a vestige of India’s long passion for the gem. With this strong tie to their heritage, the designers have always gravitated towards emeralds since the inception of their brand. They find beauty in the vast green tones of an emerald found throughout nature and in their inherent imperfections.

The sourcing arm at ILA works very closely with their gemstone factories. The ILA gemstone buyers visit the factories on a continuing basis to create the unique cuts that are prevalent in the line. A major part of the ILA buying process is to ensure that the factories abide by the stringent processes that ILA upholds in its own workshop and to ensure that the rough is sourced from sustainable mines.
With proper care, emerald jewelry can be quite durable even for everyday wear. To clean emeralds, gently scrub them with warm, soapy water and a soft toothbrush. Make sure to scrub gently, and remember to cover the sink with a soft rubber padding in case your jewelry slips from your hand. Use a lint-free cloth after to pat the emerald dry. Perform this cleaning method to remove all the dirt and bring it back to its original beauty.
Whenever your emeralds begin to look dull, a safe way to bring back their luster is by placing a tiny drop of cedar or baby oil on a q-tip and rubbing it across the surfaces of the emerald for a few minutes. You can clean the remaining oil on the surface with a lint-free cloth.
Finally, always handle emeralds with care. Avoid wearing them while doing household chores and strenuous tasks to protect them from unexpected blows. Store your emerald jewelry in a soft pouch individually or in a padded jewelry case with separate compartments. Always keep them away from other jewelry to avoid scratches.
ILA's emeralds originate in both Brasil and Zambia.
ILA gemologists have stringent standards for the emeralds that they source. The color will vary in tone based on the design but typically falls into the forest green hues. Emeralds have natural inclusions which are a part of the natural beauty of the mineral and are oiled to ensure their vibrance. Most emeralds, including all of ILA's emeralds, are heat treated unless otherwise specified. No other treatments are applied to our Emeralds.
Sapphire & Ruby

In Vedic astrology there are nine planets, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, that influence human lives in different ways. Both Sapphire & Ruby gemstones belong to the family of mineral called Corundum. Blue Sapphires represents the planet Saturn in Vedic Astrology and are said to bless the wearer with mental clarity. Rubys in Vedic Astrology represent the sun. The sun is regarded as ruler of all planets and represents greater will power, life force and brilliance.

A majority of our sapphires originate in Sri Lanka where the government has the most control over gemstone regulation. The government tightly regulates that sapphires be mined by family owned businesses or small companies. Sri Lanka favors small operations over large companies and automated machinery.
Sapphires are one of the hardest gems behind diamonds with a 9 on the hardness scale. This makes sapphires ideal for rings and for jewelry that is worn daily.
To clean your sapphire jewelry use warm, soapy water and a soft toothbrush or a damp cloth.
Sapphire & Rubies originate from the same family of stones, called corundum, with the main deposits located in Sri Lanka and Thailand.
ILA's sapphires range in vivid hues of blue tones from cornflower to royal blue. The particular shades that are used are selected by the designers based on the aesthetics they are evoking in each design. ILA's sapphires are heated to ensure their lusturous color, but are not chemically treated.

TOURMALINE

Tourmaline is considered a powerful gemstone for balancing energies and protecting the wearer. Tourmaline is unique because it comes in a wide variety of colors, each with its own metaphysical properties. For example, green tourmaline is linked to healing and vitality, while pink tourmaline is associated with love and compassion. Although not tied to a particular planet, tourmaline is believed to harmonize the energies of the body and mind, fostering emotional well-being and protection from negative influences. Its versatility and beauty make it a popular choice in gemstone therapy.

Tourmaline is a relatively durable gemstone, but it still requires gentle care to preserve its beauty in jewelry. To clean tourmaline, use warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners that can damage the stone. Store tourmaline pieces separately to prevent scratching, as the gemstone can be sensitive to pressure and impact. It's also best to avoid exposing tourmaline to extreme heat or sudden temperature changes, which can cause cracking. With proper care, tourmaline jewelry can retain its vibrant color and brilliance for years to come.
Tourmaline is a gemstone with a rich history and diverse origins, found in regions around the world, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Africa. Its name comes from the Sinhalese word "toramalli," meaning "mixed gems," reflecting its wide range of vibrant colors.
At ILA, we meticulously select tourmalines known for their vibrant color, clarity, and precision in cutting. Each gemstone is chosen for its rich, even color distribution and minimal inclusions, ensuring the hues and brilliance we look for.
