THE BRAND
The origin of ILA (इल) is rooted in Hindu mythology, drawn from the story of a woman whose beauty was said to be irresistible—gentle, kind, and a spirit of the earth. In Sanskrit, ILA translates to earth, beauty, and prayer.
Founded in 2007, ILA quickly found its place among leading retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Moda Operandi, Catbird, and ABC Carpet & Home. The collection reflects a dialogue between heritage and modernity, where ancient Indian artistry is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
Designer Vikas Sodhani traces his roots to the northwestern deserts of India—a land steeped in history, mysticism, and craftsmanship. His ancestral edifices that still stand there, carved by hand to tell stories of gods and the earth, serve as the origin of his creative vision. Through his travels back to India, these stories continue to shape the collections—each piece an offering to both origin and evolution.
VIKAS SODHANI
Founder & Designer
From an early age Vikas developed a fascination with the balance of simplicity and purpose in design. With an engineering degree from MIT, Vikas nurtured a nonconformist approach that merges fashion, engineering, and design. He balances his approach with beauty and softness that was instilled by his mother who studied textile design at FIT after arriving from India in the 70's.
